Trader Joe’s, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Genova Canned Tuna Recalled
On February 7, 2025, Tri-Union Seafoods recalled select canned tunas sold by Trader Joe’s, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Genova, due to a manufacturing defect that compromises the integrity of the “easy open” pull tab on the can. This can cause the product seal to leak, or expose its contents to contamination with Clostridium botulinum.
(See ConsumerLab’s Tuna, Salmon, Sardines & Herring Review for tests of related products.)
Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that can cause botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Symptoms include general weakness, muscle weakness, dizziness, double-vision, abdominal tension, constipation, trouble with speaking or swallowing and difficulty in breathing. People experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. It can lead to life-threatening paralysis of breathing muscles requiring support with a breathing machine (ventilator) and intensive care.
Consumers should not use the recalled tuna even if it does not look or smell spoiled and should seek immediate medical attention if feeling unwell.
