Gout and Arthritis Supplement Recalled Due to Undeclared Drugs
On December 12, 2024, Buy-herbal recalled all lots of Nhan Sam Tuyet Lien Truy Phong Hoan capsules within expiry after FDA testing found them to contain undeclared furosemide, dexamethasone and chlorpheniramine. These drugs are not permitted in dietary supplements. The capsules were promoted to treat promoted to treat gout, arthritis, and other conditions.

Dexamethasone is a prescription corticosteroid drug that has the potential to cause severe and serious adverse events including adrenal suppression, a disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones, and other adverse events, which can lead to death. Depending on the dose, these adverse events may be severe and even life threatening. Sudden discontinuation of dexamethasone can also cause potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms.
Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine available in several over the counter products (OTC). Use of tainted Nhan Sam Tuyet Lien Truy Phong Hoan capsules could lead to a higher dose of chlorpheniramine than is typically used, which could potentially cause overexcitement, loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, and seizures.
Furosemide is the active ingredient in Lasix, a potent prescription diuretic for the treatment of congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema. It can cause severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. People allergic to sulfonamides may also be allergic to furosemide. Serious adverse effects from overdose may lead to dehydration, seizures, gastrointestinal problems, kidney damage, lethargy (tiredness), collapse, and coma.
Nhan Sam Tuyet Lien Truy Phong Hoan capsules (see product photos) are packaged in bottles containing 30 capsules each. The recall includes all batches within expiration dates.
Buy-herbal is notifying customers by emails who have bought the product on the company’s website to return for a refund of the recalled product.
Consumers who have purchased these supplements should discontinue use immediately and contact their healthcare provider if they have experienced any adverse side effects. Consumers and healthcare providers are also encouraged to report any adverse reactions to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.
