Umary Hyaluronic Acid Sold on Amazon Recalled

On November 20, 2024, MXBBB issued a recall of one lot of Umary Hyaluronic Acid or Amazy Hyaluronic Acid supplements, which were sold on Amazon. FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that these supplements contain diclofenac and omeprazole, drugs that are not permitted to be sold as ingredients in dietary supplements and are not listed on the product labels.

See ConsumerLab’s Review of Joint Health Supplements for tests of related products, and CL’s article about supplements promoted to help with arthritis.

Diclofenac is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can cause serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke, as well as bleeding, ulceration, and fatal tears of the stomach and intestines. When interacting with other medications, diclofenac can significantly increase the risk for adverse events. Taking multiple products containing NSAIDS increases these risks.

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (also known as PPI) and is used for stomach acid disorders. PPI medications may cause skin reactions, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and headache. Omeprazole should not be taken with certain medications as it may hide potential stomach issues including erosions, ulcers, or stomach cancer.

Umary and Amazy Hyaluronic Acid supplements are promoted to treat pain and other conditions, and are sold on various websites, including Amazon, SoloVital, Main Products, and in some retail stores.

Recalled Hyaluronic Acid or Amazy Hyaluronic Acid supplements (see product photos) were sold nationwide on Amazon. They are packaged in a plastic container containing 30 850-mg caplets. The products can further be identified by the following:

  • UPC:7502265120323
  • Lot number: 24183
  • Expiration date: 07/01/24

Consumers who have recalled Umary products should stop using them and return them to the place of purchase. According to the recall notice, MXBBB is notifying its distributors and customers by Amazon and is arranging for the return of all recalled products.

Consumers should also contact their healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems related to taking these drug products. Consumers and or healthcare providers are advised to report any adverse reactions to the FDA’s MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Program by fax, mail, or online.

The presence of diclofenac in Umary supplements was first reported in Canada in April 2024. In July 2024, Umary Hyaluronic Acid capsules were recalled by U.S. retailer SoloVital.com after FDA testing found them to contain unlisted diclofenac and omeprazole and again warned by the FDA in September 2024 for the presence of diclofenac and omeprazole. The FDA noted it has seen an increase in fraudulent supplements promoted to treat pain that contain hidden ingredients and advised consumers to use caution when considering purchasing these types of products.
