High THC, Toxic Heavy Metals, and Psilocybin Found in Hemp Products
Over 80% of hemp-derived products purchased at various smoke shops, gas stations and specialty CBD vape shops in Delaware were found to contain higher levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive compound) than expected or permitted by law, according to a secret shopper survey conducted by cannabis trade group National Clinical Director Consortium (NCDC) and news outlet Our Delaware.
Many of the products were also found to be contaminated with toxic heavy metals, pesticides, and/or bacteria, and some were found to contain psilocybin, a hallucinogenic compound found in certain mushrooms. The test results were reported on September 14, 2024 by MJBizDaily, a cannabis industry news organization.

The secret shoppers purchased 30 hemp-derived products including edibles and vapes from 24 stores around Delaware, and then sent the products to be analyzed at a state-licensed marijuana testing lab. Product names and brands were not published.
The tests showed:
- 83.3% of the products contained more THC than permitted by law. Hemp-derived products may contain no more than 0.3% THC, according to the federal Farm Bill, which was passed in 2018 (see ConsumerLab’s Review of Hemp & Other Seed Oils for details). Some products were also inaccurately labeled. Testing found that one product labeled as containing 100 mg of THC contained 300 mg of THC.
- 63.3% of products contained synthetic cannabinoids, such as delta-8 THC. Delta-8 THC has psychoactive and intoxicating effects similar to delta-9 THC, the component responsible for the "high" people may experience from using cannabis, and can have similar adverse effects (see the Quality Concerns section of ConsumerLab’s CBD Review for more information).
- 23% of the products were contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, pesticides, mold, and “unsafe” levels of coliform bacteria.
