Walnuts Recall Due to Listeria

On July 19, 2024, Stutz Packing Company recalled its 1-pound packages of Shelled Walnuts due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. Routine sampling realized that the finished products contained bacteria. Currently, there have been no reports of illness related to this call.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause high fevers, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, miscarriages, and stillbirths. Young children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems, are more prone to severe or fatal infections.

Recalled Stutz Packing Company Shelled Walnuts (see product photos) are sold in clear plastic packaging with a red outlined white box printed in the center. They were distributed to food bank warehouses in Texas and Arizona which further distribute to small food banks, school lunch programs, shelters, prison food systems, and consumers.They can be further identified by the following:

Stutz has stopped production and distribution of this product. Consumers should discard the product if obtained or return to the origin of purchase while the investigation continues.

In May 2024, another brand of walnuts was recalled due to risk of contamination with E. coli.
