Canned Coffee Recalled Due to Botulism Risk
On June 17, 2024, Snapchill LLC recalled its canned coffee products because they have the potential to grow the toxic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The problem was identified by the FDA when the agency notified Snapchill that the company’s manufacturing process, which was not filed with the FDA, can lead to the growth and production of Clostridium botulinum in low acid canned foods.
Clostridium botulinum is bacterium that can cause botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Symptoms include general weakness, muscle weakness, dizziness, double-vision, abdominal tension, constipation, trouble with speaking or swallowing and difficulty in breathing. People experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. It can lead to life-threatening paralysis of breathing muscles requiring support with a breathing machine (ventilator) and intensive care.

The recalled coffee was distributed nationwide through various coffee roasters and retail locations, as well as through online purchases from Snapchill. Affected products include canned coffee beverages from retailers and brands such as Baba Java, Coffee Hound, Mudd LLC, Wild Goose Coffee, and others, and can be identified by the statement “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” underneath the nutrition facts panel. They are packaged in 7 oz to 12 oz metal cans, and include flavored coffees such as vanilla, hazelnut, chocolate, grape, and more. See the full list of products here.
Consumers who have affected products should destroy them or return them to their place of purchase for a refund.
