Fiji Water Recalled
On March 3, 2024, Natural Waters of Viti Limited issued a recall of over 78,000 cases of Fiji Natural Artesian Water 500 mL (24 pack) after firm testing found the presence of manganese, as well as bacteria.
Manganese is an essential mineral, but too much can cause adverse neurological effects, and some studies suggest that high manganese intake in drinking water is associated with neuromotor deficits similar to Parkinson's disease (as noted in the Manganese section of ConsumerLab’s Multivitamins and Multimineral Supplements Review). The upper tolerable intake level for manganese for adults is 11 mg per day.
The company that produces Fiji Water does not appear to have disclosed the amount of manganese found in its product, but according to a statement posted by a Fiji Water representative on ConsumerLab's Facebook page: "The classification announced last Thursday relates to a matter that took place several months ago and has been long resolved. It involved a very limited amount of products sold for a brief period only through Amazon.com and never posed any health or safety risk. The affected products were immediately and voluntarily recalled, with 99% of affected bottles reclaimed from warehouses and the remainder in warehouses to be returned. The consumers who might have received the impacted product were directly notified back in March. We conducted evaluations of the levels of manganese, a naturally occurring mineral, and any bacteria, and consumers can be fully confident of no health or safety risk. Simply stated, we recalled this limited supply of product because it did not align with the strict quality standards we uphold. FIJI Water places safety and the quality of our product as our highest priority. There is currently no issue of concern with FIJI Water."
Recalled packs of Fiji Natural Artesian Water were sold nationally online through Amazon in 24-bottle packs and can be further identified by the following:

Is it true that there are bits of plastic in drinking water, specialty salts, or other foods and beverages? How concerned should I be?
