On November 21, 2023, the FDA warned consumers not to purchase or use Neptune’s Fix products because they contain tianeptine. The FDA has received severe adverse event reports after use of these products, including seizure and loss of consciousness.

Tianeptine is an atypical tricyclic drug used as an antidepressant in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, but it is not approved for medical use in the U.S. and is an unscheduled pharmaceutical agent. However, it has been illegally sold and promoted for treating anxiety, depression, pain, opioid use disorder and other conditions. Tianeptine can cause effects similar to opioids, and misuse can lead to severe neurologic, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal symptoms, and opioid-like dependence and overdose. Stopping the drug can cause withdrawal symptoms similar to those experienced when stopping opioid drugs, such as agitation, sweating, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure and tremor (More information about tianeptine is available on the FDA’s website).

Neptune’s Fix products are sold online and at gas stations, vape or smoke shops, or other locations. The FDA is currently testing Neptune’s Fix products, which state the product contains tianeptine, but may contain other harmful ingredients that are not listed on product labels.

The agency previously warned companies selling products containing tianeptine in 2018 and 2022.

The FDA advises consumers who experience a reaction to tianeptine products to seek immediate help. Consumers and healthcare providers can report any adverse reactions to the FDA’s MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Program.
