FDA Warns Consumers Not to Use Tapee Tea
On August 31, 2023, the FDA warned consumers not to purchase or use Tapee Tea products after FDA laboratory analysis found them to contain dexamethasone and piroxicam, drugs that are not listed on the product's label.
Dexamethasone is a prescription corticosteroid drug that has the potential to cause severe and serious adverse events including adrenal suppression, a disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones, and other adverse events, which can lead to death. Sudden discontinuation of dexamethasone case also cause potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and may increase the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, as well as gastrointestinal damage such as bleeding and perforation of the stomach and intestines. The drug ingredients may also interact with other medications and significantly increase the risk of adverse events.
Tapee Tea (see product photos) is promoted for pain relief and is sold on company’s websites, and possibly in some retail stores. The tea’s herbal ingredients listed on the company’s website include wolfberry, sea holly, java tea, and cat’s whiskers.
The FDA has advised that anyone who has taken these products should consult with their health care professionals to safely discontinue use.
Consumers and healthcare providers can report any adverse reactions to the FDA’s MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Program.
