Dr. Berne’s MSM and Castor Oil Eye Drops Recalled Due to Bacterial and Fungal Contamination

On August 26, 2023, Dr. Berne’s Whole Health Products issued a recall of all lots of its MSM DROPS 5%, 15% Solution, Dr. Berne’s Organic Castor Oil Eye Drops and Dr. Berne’s MSM MIST 15% Solution due to the risk of bacterial and fungal contamination.

Using contaminated eye drops could result in minor to serious vision-threatening infection which could possibly progress to a life-threatening infection. The company has received two reports of adverse events related to this recall.

The recall was issued after FDA analysis found bacterial and fungal contamination in one lot (lot 6786) of Dr. Berne's MSM DROPS 5% Solution.

All recalled Dr. Berne’s MSM eye drops, mist, and castor oil eye drops (see product photos) are packaged in white plastic bottles and were distributed through Dr. Berne’s website and can be further identified by the following:

  • Dr. Berne’s MSM DROPS 5% Solution (30 ml/1.014 oz.)
  • Dr. Berne’s MSM DROPS 15% Solution (30 ml/1.014 oz.)
  • Dr. Berne’s Organic Castor Oil Eye Drops (30 ml/1.014 oz.)
  • Dr. Berne’s MSM MIST 15% Solution (30 ml/1.014 oz.)

Consumers should not use these products, and contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to their use.

Consumers and healthcare providers can report any adverse reactions to the FDA’s MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Program.
