FDA Warns Sellers of Tainted Honey-Based Sexual Enhancement Products
On July 12, 2022, the FDA issued warning letters to four companies selling honey-based products promoted for sexual enhancement after tests conducted by the FDA found the products to contain the prescription drugs Tadalafil and Sildenafil.
Tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis) and Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) are prescribed for erectile dysfunction. These drugs can cause symptoms like headache and flushing and can interact with medications containing nitrates such as nitroglycerin, resulting in dangerously low blood pressure.
The products were sold on Etsy and company websites and were promoted with statements such as, “Reduces vaginal discharge and protects against bacterial infection.” These honey-based products were also promoted to treat arthritis, lower cholesterol, and accelerate the healing of fractured bones among other things.
