Mandalorian and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizers Recalled Due to Benzene, Methanol

On April 1, 2022, Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. issued a recall of two lots of The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68% and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68% to the consumer level following FDA testing, which found the presence of benzene in The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer product and methanol in the Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer.

Methanol, sometimes called wood alcohol, is poisonous. Methanol exposure through the skin or by ingestion can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. The FDA first warned consumers about the possible presence of methanol and other toxic ingredients in certain hand sanitizers in June, 2020, and has continued to update consumers about potentially-affected products and recalls. Benzene is a human carcinogen and exposure can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin. Exposure can be cancerous, including leukemia, and blood cancer of the bone marrow, and can also result in life-threatening blood disorders.

The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer is available in green and blue formulations and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer is packaged in 2.11 fl oz/60 mL bottles (see product images). They were distributed nationwide via three retail outlets but have since been removed from sale for unrelated commercial reasons. The voluntarily recalled products can be identified by the following:

  • The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, blue/green color, • Lot: 20E21, Product Size: 2.11 oz, NDC: 74530-012-02, Expiration Date: 09/30/2022
  • Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, Lot: 20D21, Product Size: 2.11 oz, NDC: 74530-013-02, Expiration Date: 06/30/2022

Consumers who have these recalled hand sanitizers should stop using them and properly discard the products.
