Update: (3/7/22) This recall has been expanded to include one lot of Similac PM 60/40 following the death of an infant who tested positive for Cronobacter sakazaki and consumed Similac PM 60/40 from the affected lot. While no distributed product has tested positive for the presence of Cronobacter sakazakii, affected lot numbers are highlighted below.

On February 17, 2022, the FDA advised consumers not to use certain lots of Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare powdered infant formulas that have been linked to four cases of bacterial infection with Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella illness, including one death.

Affected infant formulas were distributed by Abbot Nutrition’s from its Sturgis, Michigan facility. Abbott Nutrition has issued a recall of affected products as the FDA continues to investigate. Liquid infant formulas are not included in the recall.

Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections or meningitis. Symptoms include jaundice, grunting breaths, and abnormal movements, and can results in bowel damage which can spread through the blood to other parts of the body. Salmonella are a group of bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illness and fever. Severe cases may result in high fever, blood in the urine or stool, or death.

The FDA is advising consumers not to use Similac, Alimentum, or EleCare powdered infant formulas if:

• the first two digits of the code are 22 through 37; and
• the code on the container contains K8, SH or Z2; and
• the expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.
