Best D-Mannose Supplements for UTIs? ConsumerLab Selects Its Top Picks
White Plains, New York, December 14, 2023 —  D-mannose, a naturally occurring sugar, is often taken as a supplement to help prevent or treat urinary tract infections, although more research is needed to prove it’s effective.

Recent ConsumerLab tests of popular D-mannose supplements on the market showed that all of the products contained the claimed amount of D-mannose, and none were contaminated with significant amounts of heavy metals. However, the suggested dosage on labels was, in most cases, inconsistent with clinical trials. In addition, despite the fact that the D-mannose in products was essentially the same, the cost to obtain an equivalent dose (2,000 mg) from products ranged from 18 cents to over $2.00.

ConsumerLab selected two D-mannose supplements, including a powder and a capsule, as Top Picks, based on high quality, low cost, and the ability to provide an appropriate dose of D-mannose.

The results are available online in ConsumerLab's new D-Mannose Supplements Review, which includes test results and comparisons for 11 products. Ten products were selected for testing by ConsumerLab: Azo D-Mannose, BulkSupplements.com D-Mannose, Microingredients D-Mannose Powder, NOW D-Mannose Pure Powder, NOW D-Mannose Urinary Support 500 mg, Nutricost D-Mannose, Pure Encapsulations D-Mannose, Solaray CranActin D-Mannose, Swanson D-Mannose, and Uquora Urinary Care 1: Flush Proactive Regimen Part 1 – Pink Lemonade Flavor. One additional product passed the same testing and was Approved through CL's voluntary Quality Certification Program: GNC Herbal Plus Cranberry & D-Mannose.

As discussed in the Review, preliminary research suggests that D-mannose might prevent bacteria that cause urinary tract infections from adhering to the lining of the urinary tract. However, most clinical trials have not been blinded or placebo-controlled, which is needed to prove a benefit. The Review also discusses dosage, the best way to take and store D-mannose, and potential side effects and drug interactions with D-mannose.
