White Plains, New York, July 10, 2018 — Chromium supplements are promoted to help control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and with weight loss. But do they really work, and if so, which products are the best quality and provide the right dose of chromium for different needs? To answer these important questions, ConsumerLab recently purchased and tested popular chromium supplements for their amounts of chromium as well as for a potentially toxic form of chromium known as hexavalent chromium, and it carefully reviewed clinical literature regarding the effects of chromium.

All of the selected supplements were found to contain their claimed amounts of chromium and none exceeded contamination limits for hexavalent chromium. However, there were significant differences in the amounts of chromium in the products, ranging from 200 mcg to 1,000 mcg per day -- meaning that some people could be getting too much or too little chromium, depending on their needs. Among the products that passed its tests, ConsumerLab selected three Top Picks representing the best quality and value based on dose.

The findings are available online now in ConsumerLab's Chromium Supplements Review, which also summarizes the clinical evidence for and against chromium for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes, weight loss, and hypoglycemia. The review also discusses the differences among forms of chromium, like chromium picolinate chromium polynicotinate, chromium chloride and a form marketed as "GTF" chromium. It also provides information about dosage, the safety and potential side effects of chromium supplements, and explains what to look for on labels when choosing a product.

The Review includes test results and comparisons for seven chromium supplements including six selected for testing by ConsumerLab and one that passed the same testing through CL's voluntary Quality Certification Program. Products covered in the report are: 365 [Whole Foods] Chromium Picolinate, ez Melts Chromium, GNC Chromium Picolinate, Ortho Molecular Products Reacted Chromium, Puritan's Pride Chromium Picolinate, Source Naturals Chromium Picolinate and Spring Valley [Walmart] Chromium Picolinate.
