Eliquis Supplement Interactions -- box of Eliquis

Answer:

Yes, several popular herbal supplements can impact the effectiveness of apixaban (Eliquis), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), betrixaban (Bevyxxa), and other anticoagulant drugs (blood-thinners) classified as direct factor Xa inhibitors.

These blood-thinners are broken down in the body by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. Supplements that activate this enzyme may reduce the amount of these medications in the body, while supplements inhibit this enzyme may lead to excessive blood levels of these medications.

Other supplements have their own blood-thinning or clot-promoting effects, which, correspondingly, may increase or reduce the effectiveness of these blood thinners.

Also, be aware that some supplements interact with the anticoagulant dabigatran (Pradaxa), a direct thrombin inhibitor.

Also, find out which supplement that can interact with blood-thinners such as warfarin is unlikely to interact with apixaban (Eliquis) and other direct factor Xa inhibitors.

Does Consumer Lab have any specific reports of specific scientifically documented interactions between supplements and Eliquist (not another blood thinner)? My interest in this is based on the fact that I take Eliquis.

Saw Palmetto and beta-sitosterol are sometimes described as having an interaction with blood thinners. Would either of them affect direct factor Xa inhibitors like Eliquis?

I take a lot of prescription drugs, one of which is Eliquis. Beginning to wonder if I
should chance taking ANY supplements. Seems like prescriptions and supplements are not made to "go together"!

Much of it depends on how much of the supplements you're taking, as well as how many that are shown on the list.

Great question! Fresh garlic and fresh ginger have both been linked with blood thinning effects, as described in detail in our Reviews:

Ginger: https://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/ginger-supplement-review/ginger/#cautions

Thank you! Thank you! This was most timely. I was just put on Eliquis and and only some of this information was on the pharmacy sheet!
