Our Members Asked:
Is bromelain a good alternative to NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, for muscle or joint pain?
Answer:
Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapple which is often promoted for reducing pain and inflammation. Unfortunately, as discussed in the "What It Does" section of the Digestive Enzyme Supplements Review, studies have failed to show benefit from bromelain alone, and there is only preliminary evidence that it may be as helpful as the NSAID diclofenac (Volaren) when combined with additional ingredients. Although the bromelain combination formula was tolerated better or equal to diclofenac, there are potential side effects and drug interactions when taking bromelain.
