Our Members Asked:
Do magnesium supplements, like Magtein, help memory or protect against Alzheimer's disease?
Answer:
Magnesium plays an important role in brain cell function. Adequate intake of magnesium (from the diet and/or supplements) may optimize cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing dementia, as suggested by several studies. However, getting too much magnesium is not beneficial, and no form of magnesium has been proven to be better than others at crossing the blood-brain barrier to enter brain — although some forms of magnesium are better absorbed than others from the gut.
For more details, including results of studies with magnesium L-threonate (sold as Magtein and in the product Clarimem), see the Dementia and cognition section of the Magnesium Supplements Review.
