Our Members Asked:
Are there supplements that interact with estrogen-replacement therapies like Premarin and Estrace?
Answer:
Estrogen replacement therapies, including oral forms as well as estrogen creams and vaginal tablets, such as Estrace, Imvexxy, Ogen, Premarin, and Vagifem, can be affected by certain supplements and foods. St. John's wort, and possibly quercetin, may decrease levels of these drugs, while grapefruit juice can increase levels (Vagifem Prescribing Information 2014; Premarin Prescribing Information 2018). Soy isoflavones have mild estrogenic effects and, theoretically, high doses could compete with estrogen replacement hormones for absorption.
Taking estrogen can also affect your ability to absorb certain vitamins and minerals, such as folate, vitamin C and zinc.
