Answer:

Counterfeit supplements have been sold on Amazon and reports of this have been increasing lately. For example, a lawsuit was filed in November 2023 against multiple parties allegedly selling counterfeit Prevagen on Amazon. In September 2023, it was discovered that counterfeit versions of Pure Encapsulations L-glutamine and NatureMD’s GutConnect 365 were sold Amazon. In August 2023, it was revealed that a counterfeit version of Bausch + Lomb’s PreserVision AREDS 2 Eye Vitamin & Mineral supplement had been sold on Amazon.

Three months earlier, in April 2023, two supplement companies, NOW Foods and Fungi Perfecti, separately reported counterfeit versions of their products sold on Amazon. NOW Foods discovered 11 different counterfeit NOW supplements, including psyllium husk capsules, magnesium citrate, and a men’s multivitamin, sold on Amazon by a single Amazon seller. Fungi Perfecti discovered 23 different sellers on Amazon selling counterfeits of its Host Defense brand mushroom supplements. In October 2024, Fungi Perfecti won a lawsuit that prohibits JT Best Deals from advertising or selling Fungi Perfecti products through any Internet or non-Internet channels. Allegedly, it had been selling these on Amazon.com (under "JT BestDeals LLC"), Walmart.com (under "Best Deals International"), eBay.com (under "Best Deals 4 Less 12" and "Direct Deals Group"), and the private website goodszon.com.

Counterfeit versions of TruNiagen (nicotinamide riboside) that contained virtually none of this ingredient were found to be sold by several unauthorized sellers in late 2024.

Of course, before even selecting a supplement, to be safe, it is important to ensure that a product does not have red flags that may indicate a problem with quality, and that it has been independently tested for quality by a third party such as ConsumerLab. To then make sure that what you buy online is the real, authentic product -- avoiding a fake and potentially dangerous item, read the tips below and see the information for specific brands. Also, watch this short video:

1. Shop Directly from the Brand's Website

The best way to avoid counterfeit products, when possible, is to purchase directly from the brand's website. Brands that do not sell directly to consumers will often have a “Where to Buy” page or may provide links to trusted distributors and retailers, some of which may also be authorized to sell from their storefronts on Amazon.

Most brands also have authorized distributors and retailers who sell their products. Many of them list these authorized sellers on a "Where to Buy" page on their site, and some of these sellers may also be authorized to sell that brand from their own storefronts on Amazon or other retail platforms.

Some brands offer, on their own websites, an option to "Buy with Prime," which allows you to take advantage of free shipping associated with Amazon Prime membership when buying a product sold by the actual brand. Choosing this will first take you to a page on Amazon.com, where you must login with your Amazon Prime account, and then to a page on buywithprime.amazon.com, where you can purchase the product with that account.

2. If on Amazon:

- Be Sure It’s "Sold By" the Actual Brand, An Authorized Reseller of the Brand, or, possibly, Amazon itself, and That It "Ships From Amazon"

If shopping on Amazon, purchase directly from the supplement brand or its store (storefront) on Amazon under the names it has registered with Amazon (and not other names, even if they look similar to a registered name). You can also purchase products that are sold by resellers that have been authorized by the brand to sell its products on Amazon.

See the table below for actual, registered brand names, store names, and authorized resellers of each brand, as confirmed by ConsumerLab with each brand.  When you are about to place the order on Amazon, be sure that you see one of these names after the words "Sold by:" (look at the small print under the "Add to Cart/Buy Now" buttons). Also be sure that you see the words “Ships from: Amazon.”

You may see that a product is "Sold by: Amazon." According to an Amazon representative contacted by ConsumerLab, products "sold by" and "shipped by" Amazon have had at least one lot of the product checked by Amazon to verify that its supply chain documentation is accurate. However, concerns have been raised that products that have undergone this verification could be mingled by Amazon with products that have not gone through this process. ConsumerLab asked Amazon’s public relations group if buying a product that is "sold by" and "shipped by" Amazon assures that the product is always from the brand itself or a distributor authorized by the brand. Unfortunately, we were told, on October 11, 2023, that "Amazon does not have a response" at this time. Nevertheless, if a product is sold by Amazon and there is a problem with the product, Amazon is likely to provide a refund, based on reports from ConsumerLab members.

Be aware that some brands, like Trader Joe’s, do not sell through Amazon, so if you buy a Trader Joe's product on Amazon, you won't be getting it from Trader Joe's or a seller authorized by Trader Joe's. The "Sold by" information will show who is actually selling it to you and the product could be counterfeit or being re-sold after being originally purchased at a Trader Joe's store. In fact, even the name of the seller need not be an actual entity because, according to a court filing by Amazon, “The selling account names selected by third-party sellers do not necessarily reflect the legal names of their businesses.”

- Check for Amazon Transparency Codes

Some products purchased on Amazon can now be verified using one of two smartphone apps (Amazon Shopping or the Transparency app). For brands that are registered with Amazon for the program, you can scan a product’s transparency code on these apps after you receive it. Amazon verifies the identity of companies that apply to participate in the transparency program, which was launched in 2019 as part of its effort to help detect and remove counterfeit products from the site, known as Project Zero. More than 30,000 brands are apparently enrolled in the Amazon Transparency program. However, Amazon does not provide a list of participating companies or products, and brands may choose which products they enroll in the program. Consequently, consumers are left uncertain of whether the lack of a transparency code on a product means it is counterfeit.

3. What to Look for Online to Avoid Counterfeit Supplements

To help clarify things, we created the table below. The table shows, for each brand, sites authorized to sell the brand’s products, the registered names by which the brand is sold, and whether or not the brand uses Amazon transparency codes on its products. Note: We have reached out to all of the brands listed below and have checked for information on their websites regarding where to buy their products. A question mark (?) in the table indicates that we are waiting for a response.

4. Check Product Reviews for Reported Problems

Pay close attention to customer reviews and photos, particularly from reviewers with past experience with a product. Be concerned if reviews or photos indicate that a product received from a particular seller arrived in unusual packaging, contained pills of a different color, size, or shape than the authentic product, or had misspellings on labels. These tell-tale signs have been spotted with counterfeit, phony supplements.

What to Do if You Receive a Counterfeit Product

If you suspect that a product you received may be counterfeit, don’t use it.

If you purchased the supplement from Amazon, request a refund or exchange. (Note that third-party sellers may have different return policies than those sold and shipped by Amazon – and some may have a no return policy, so be sure to check return and refund policies before buying). Also consider reporting the issue through the “Report a problem” link on the product page, and sharing the problem in a review, which may help other customers.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also has a website for consumers to report fraudulent products, and you can let ConsumerLab know about quality issues or adverse events you’ve experienced with supplements you’ve purchased on our Report A Problem page.

If you experience a serious adverse event from any supplement – counterfeit or not -- you should report it to the U.S. FDA through their Safety Reporting Portal.

Grateful for this report and glad hear this feedback. I’ve not had these issues but will def be steering clear of Amazon. I use iHerb for most of my supplements and BJ’s for 2.

I almost never buy anything on Amazon for many reasons and have found that iherb.com is a great source for supplements and other healthful products. Furthermore, iherb's packaging uses cardboard boxes and pleated heavy paper instead of foam inside.

Thank you for bringing this issue up.
I had a terrible experience with a counterfeit product that I bought from Amazon. One day, I received an email telling me that the product I received was probably a counterfeit. It is distressing not to know what was actually in it.
I also had the same experience as other members: being unable to warn others by trying to give a negative review on Amazon.
Buying directly from the brand or going to a store in person are the best ways to protect oneself.

Probably safest to buy direct from manufacturer online, and pay for shipping. Lessens the value of Amazon Prime’s “free” shipping, btw.

Making sure you get a real product is so important--thank you for this article. Are online merchants listed through Consumer Lab's "Price Check" feature vetted authorized resellers of that product?

ConsumerLab.com

That should usually be the case. As you will see in the table of authorized sellers (above), merchant's in our PriceCheck program have been verified by us as authorized sellers of many popular brands.

I discovered once that a supplement I bought from the manufacturer had very different ingredients than the one from Amazon. The reason I checked because it was much less expensive on Amazon, but exactly the same box from the outside. Now I always compare the listed ingredients before I buy

I try to always purchase from the manufacturers website FIRST, unless the shipping is outrageous, then look to other places. I am an amazon prime member but very careful what I order.

Anyone who puts a substance in their body without knowing where it came from is endangering their life. It is just beyond comprehension how so many people do this without a moments thought. The consequences of this flawed thinking and decision making often reveals itself at some point later in a persons life in the form of pain, disease, sickness and dysfunction. The government has not intervened before and does not appear to be interested in intervening now. The only hope for the public at this time is to buy only products endorsed by CL and from companies who carry the CL seal of approval. The hope would be that this will become so valuable to supplement companies that they would be willing to conform to any criteria that CL has. Customers must know where the supplements they are taking are sourced from, as well as who the company is that is selling them. This would allow CL to "influence" higher standards of transparency for consumers. Don't put anything in your body that is not approved and endorsed by CL. The CL team cannot be applauded enough for their service to consumers.

Yes, it’s a shame that we live in a world where we can’t trust the people who market products. I’m old enough to remember what it was like in the 40’s 50’s. What’s changed?

Patricia18705: There have ALWAYS been unscruoulous "snake oil" salesmen and con artists. Even the ancient Latin language had the expresion "Caveat Emptor" ("Let the buyer beware"). The main difference now is that with online commerce they can pop-up, make a lot of sales and disappear much more quickly/easily than before.

A few months ago, I started using glycine powder for joint pain & it really helped. I tried different brands, all purchased on Amazon, just because I could. Then I purchased a canister of glycine made by Horbaach. Unlike other glycine powders, this one had the consistency of wet sand. I figured that Horbaach simply made theirs differently. But my joint pain slowly began to return. And I had gone past the "return window" at Amazon. I took pictures of the Horbaach product, including a picture that proved the powder was very moist. I sent it directly to Horbaach's website & got a response from them to "stop using it immediately & contact Amazon," since I had purchased it there. I called Amazon & explained the situation to the rep, & even though the return window had come & gone, she immediately refunded me. I don't purchase glycine from Amazon anymore:)

Amazon won't allow returns for such supplements (I called customer service and got refund but had to do some talking -- it was this or dispute charge on Am Ex).

Great information…so thankful for this site! I did want to mention, about a year ago I received the most disgusting “moist” package that I ordered from Amazon which contained a body wash product in a bottle that had a grocery bag wrapped around it several times, and Body wipes that were filthy on the outside. I couldn’t even bring myself to even take the items out of the box. I was thoroughly disturbed to put it mildly. I noticed right away the box didn’t look like anything else I have ever received from Amazon. Thats because it didn’t. It had a man’s name and info (like a package you might receive from family or friends. Of course I went straight to Amazon to return. That is when I noticed the “Sold/Shipped by” on the checkout page. I guess I had just never paid attention to that. I learned my lesson (so I thought) and always made sure I purchased products from the Brand or “Sold or Shipped by Amazon”. Over the last few months I have been purchasing a lot of skin care items and have been shocked by what I have received. Many products missing the seal, have clearly been used, and in some cases, no product at all in the container! Your article comes at a perfect time. Just as we have to be careful in terms of what we eat, we have to be just as careful with what we put on our skin!
P.S. I did get a VERY fast response to my request (more like demand) for a refund on the body wash products. I mean within like 5 minutes fast. Considering it was directly from the seller, I had to assume he knows at least some people are going to complain. Sadly, some people don’t and that’s how sellers like that exist.

This factsheet gives you just how far the government regulates the supplemnt industry. If you take supplements this will help you make wise choices. The US supplement industry brings in $40 billion/year and Americans spend about $30 billion/year in this market. It does need better regulation.

Such a helpful article! I’ve returned Dr. Whitaker’s Berberine to Amazon twice, because it arrived with the safety seal broken and discoloration around the opening. The return policy is described as “No returns accepted,” but when I called the support phone number and described the problem, they issued the refund. I definitely recommend calling them if you find yourself in a similar situation!

This is incredibly helpful. I didn't realize I was buying Natrol Melatonin from a non Amazon shipper that had only been in business since 2023 It was a little less expensive than buying the one shipping from Amazon. I cancelled the order from the original shipper and found same product I needed through Amazon as the shipper. This is why I subscribe to Consumer Lab and recommend to all my friends that they subscribe too.

I'm so grateful for this review! Thank you Consumer Labs. Information like this is why I just renewed my membership for Two Years!

I will now be more careful and just avoid buying any supplements from Amazon. I admit, the convenience Amazon offers is sooo seductive. Ordering things when I need them without having to plan too far in advance just makes my life easier! But I generally avoid buying any product from a "third party seller." After reading this article, though, I will have to strengthen my vigilance and make sure not to buy Any supplements from Amazon.

BTW, couldn't help noticing the irony that Amazon's Transparency program is anything but! ...Sheesh

I can definitely "second" your endorsement of iHerb. I've been using them for two years now and it's been an excellent experience. The shipping is efficient and fast, and when you have a problem, their customer service reps get on it right away. It gives us an alternative to The Big A. Of course, I'll add that I'm merely a supplement customer and I do not work for or have any financial interest in these companies.

Wish I had seen this before. About a year ago I bought some Pure Encapsulations melatonin (3mg) on Amazon and it had absolutely no effect to help me sleep. I threw it away. I've tried other brands of melatonin and they do work. A few years ago I bought a different product (from Hammer Nutrition) and was suspicious because the capsules were a different color. I threw those out too. No more buying supplements off of Amazon for me.

I quit buying anything on Amazon that said "Made in China" about 5 years ago, but I didn't think about fake supplements being on Amazon. I just renewed my ConsumerLab account. I'd rather pay ConsumerLab than Amazon any day. Now we just need ConsumerLab to start a streaming TV service.

Is the Swanson store on Amazon legit?

ConsumerLab.com
September 29, 2023

Yes, as ConsumerLab confirmed with Swanson, and as noted in the table above, "Swanson Health Products" and "Swanson Health Products" Store are Swanson's official stores on Amazon. If you see an Amazon store name different from what is noted in the table, it is not Swanson's official Amazon store.

Caroline18032
October 15, 2023

I usually buy from Amazon.com.au so there are different sellers - I bought a Swanson product from a non Swanson Amazon.com.au store and after reading about counterfeits on CL reached out to Swanson last week with photos. They verified the batch number and said the product was genuine.

I avoid buying anything truly important on Amazon. Birkenstock decided to disallow the selling of their footwear on Amazon because there were so many counterfeits. I don't buy supplements, or anything I'm going to ingest, from Amazon.

Maureen18024

I agree wholeheartedly. Too many 3rd party sellers who are actually in China. I've learned my lesson. I only buy books from Amazon.

Carolina18021
October 06, 2023

Thank you for the heads-up! Moving forward, I will check everything I buy from Amazon. I suggest everybody checks the seller´s site. If the price is not exorbitant higher, I buy directly from the seller because Amazon charges them a hefty commission and some sell almost at cost just to have the exposure. It is not fair. I know that for a fact because we used to sell our books through Amazon and the commission was 40%!! After a while, we could not afford it any longer. Amazon should be denounced in social media for not publishing comments regarding counterfeit products. It is up to us to shame them. Thank you CL for being our watchdog!

Oh My OH My Oh My.. I have been buying my supplemetns on Amazon for at least 4 or more years. Unless, the ones that CL recommend are only at other stores. I stricktly go by CL. But Oh I have seen photos of supplements on reviews and just ignored them as being spam. I also have had a reaction on a certain supplment purchased on Amazon, then found the original website had them cheaper and tryed them with no reaction. I will be more careful from this time forward. Trying to save money on health, is smart, but be smart about saving. THANK YOU CL FOR THIS REVIEW. OH I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER INFORMED AND THIS IS IMPORTANT information to all of us CL subscribers!

I avoid buying anything from Amazon, especially supplements. Lately I’ve read several articles about fakes and bad practices on Amazon. It’s really a shame. So many people have been duped or worse, ingest a fake product. Hopefully the word will get out and if people stop buying perhaps Amazon will take notice!

Thanks for publishing folks' experiences purchasing supplements on Amazon, and thanks to ConsumerLab's (CL) most welcomed research and reporting on issues of supplements generally. I intend to spend less time shopping on Amazon, and more reading and studying on CL. As others here have mentioned, CL's web content is well worth annual subscription fees. After all, our health is at stake.

I buy items from Amazon on occasion, but never supplements. I use Shaklee products. September 12, 2023

Thanks for a very helpful article. I learned a long time ago to always check who the seller is and how it is shipped on amazon. I have seen so many reviews on how things were badly packaged, condition received, open & spilled in etc. Each time people were blaming Amazon for the packaging when in reality it was not shipped by them. Quick shipping and easy returns are important to buying anything on line - so sometimes buying on Amazon does work well. Glad you encouraged us to do our own assessment and due diligence for any site we are considering. I am finding that vetting sellers on Ebay and Etsy are also extremely important.

Barbara17994

Recently I called the manufacturer of a probiotic to ask if they sold through Amazon because I received a product (Microbiome Labs MegaSporeBiotic) that didn't seem right. They do not and have a fraud team looking at the problem. Not only does the fraudster have a full brand page, they direct the purchaser back to the real manufacturer for returns!!! Customer service rep said it's a huge issue in that they can't take the stuff back and the consumer is stuck. I talked to an Amazon customer service person by phone who refunded my money and promised to report the seller so the page could be taken down. Guess what, still there. Also the recommendation about reading reviews won't work either as I submitted one outlining my discussion with the manufacturer, and it was promptly rejected. No more supplement purchases from Amazon for me.

ConsumerLab.com
September 13, 2023

Thanks for sharing this so that others are aware. We see that various sellers are selling that product on Amazon despite Microbiome Labs stating that it does not sell on Amazon and does not permit its products to be sold on Amazon. Anyone selling it on Amazon is an unauthorized reseller. We've added information about this to the article above. (Our quality rating of the product itself is in our Probiotic Review at https://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/probiotic-supplements/probiotics/).

I ordered Tazo Zen organic tea on Amazon, and the product inside the box did not match the product on the outside of the box (or what I ordered). I wrote a review with photos showing what I got and what was descried, and the review was rejected. I did get my money back, but why won't Amazon let us post these reviews?

BA
October 06, 2023

I have not been able to post any factual negative reviews on Amazon. They are always rejected for one mysterious reason or another. I've realized that reviews and ratings on Amazon are no long viable sources of information; I consider them all questionable now. Very disappointing.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I do, indeed, buy NOW products on Amazon because they are often not available locally, and they ship for free. I live in Hawaii, and without Prime shipping the cost of shipping when buying from other sources can equal the cost of the product. I am careful about vetting sellers other than Amazon, though.

Per #4 above, Amazon has CODES on 10,000 products. They have 1000’s of large and small independent contractors-we must be vigilant.! I am thankful for CONSUMER LABS and their huge agenda of 3rd party testing. Making the right choice can be daunting. Items 1-4 above gives us a big advantage. ConsumerLab.com
May 08, 2023

Katherine17926

I'll second that. A while back, we purchased digestive enzymes from Amazon which were not as effective as they usually are. While I think they were authentic (not counterfeits), we grew concerned that the storage of vitamin products might not be as careful at Amazon as they would be when purchasing directly from the brand.

AM17925

It may come down to that now if this is a problem. I have too many health issues that this problem could exacerbate.
