Our Members Asked:
Are some probiotics dangerous? I've heard that Bacillus subtilis, a soil-based probiotic, can cause infections.
Answer:
As explained in more detail in the Concerns and Cautions section of our Probiotic Supplements Review, probiotics are generally safe, including Bacillus subtilis, but infections have occurred in people who are immunocompromised, including those undergoing cancer treatment, and those with intravenous lines, feeding tubes, or urinary catheters. Allergic reactions can also occur in people with milk allergies (due to probiotics cultured on milk-containing media) or yeast allergies (due to yeast-based probiotics).
In its testing of probiotics, ConsumerLab.com also checks for potential contamination of products with pathogenic organisms, including E. coli, Salmonella, and undesirable yeasts and molds. See which products are Approved or Not Approved, as well as our Top Picks in our Probiotic Supplements Review.
